S3785. This is a new discovery coin.King George III Sovereign struck "en medaille" or in medal alignment. The coin is ex Lot 323,Spink Auction 203,London 24 June 2010.
Here is a brief story: I had been approached by a prominent Sovereign collector with a similar but better quality coin who
asked my opinion.I thought there was nothing wrong with the coin but
when asked the opinion of other dealers they comented it was probably a
counterfeit coin.I was not convinced and kept checking each 1817 coin
appearing in auctions as well as in dealer's lists at least as much as I
could with the hope to find a second example.Well I did and here it is. Technically
the coin grades "Fine" with perhaps a little better reverse. However it
was not properly identified in the sale catalogue where it was listed as
"Fine".When I viewed the coin I did indicate this to Spink.However I
was not in the sale room and therefore I don't know how it was handled
and if any comments were made.I think it was probably overlooked. Because the issue is very difficult to correctly illustrate online, I borrowed the idea from an old coin book
and took a normal 1817 coin and placed it next to the coin on offer
here.I then placed both coins standing with the bust of the King up and
put them in front of a mirror and took the picture. It is slightly
blurred because the high tech 100mm macro lens could not properly put both images in
focus so I did it manually and focused in between but the result is
nevertheless very clear. The normal 1817 coin is on the left and it's
reverse is pictured in the mirror upside down. The medal alignment coin
is on the right and it's mirror image sits upside up.I have also known a
perfectly genuine 1872M Shield Sovereign (S3854) in a private
collection with a similar error but this again is not listed in
books. Therefore the error is known to occur but apparently is very rare.
Both coins (the one on offer here and the one in
private hands) can be viewed at our table at Coinex,October 1 and 2
2010.The second specimen is a bold VF and offered at £2500.
