61.Greece, King George B,1935 Proof 20 Drachma Gold,Divo 112,
Only 200 struck out of a planned issue of 750 with fewer than 100 actually reaching Greece.
Following a vote by the Greek people, the monarchy was restored in 1935. King George II, who had lived in London for twelve years, became king in November 1935. To mark the fifth anniversary of the restoration the Greek Government authorized the issue of three souvenir coins, two in gold for 100 and 20 Drachmai and one in silver for 100 Drachmai. Spink and Son were appointed as agents for the issue and the coins were ordered from the Heaton mint in Birmingham.
O. Steinberger and Frank Kovacs prepared the dies in late 1939 but production of the coins was disrupted by the outbreak of World War II which meant only a few of the planned issues were actually struck.
This coin was originally acquired from Spink around 1939 and comes with a Spink packet noting 'by appointment to the late King George V.
Ex Lot 78,Spink Auction 9031,26 November 2009.
